Detailed criteria – Assessment Task#3

Here is a copy of the marking sheet for Assessment Task#3 (the collaborative group report/blog). It details the individual criterion that the teaching staff will apply. Use it as a checklist in preparing for this task.

Reminder – new test time & Sat revision session

As per the announcement in class yesterday, we’re changing the Monday test time to 7.45-9.15pm (in response to the poll results we received which indicated that a majority of students wanted the change or didn’t mind).

Also we’re running a test revision session tomorrow, Saturday (20/11) at 11am, for about 30-40 minutes. This will take place in LT4.02 for both classes.

The revision session will consist of Brigid and I running through some typical questions similar to those being presented in the test (as well as answering any general questions you might have).  It is not strictly a ‘mock test’ – as we won’t be conducting the session under test conditions.

However, we will get you to try and answer some practice questions using keepad student response devices (if this new technology works OK!). These devices let the class anonymously answer practice multi-choice questions – and they will help you work out what you know and what you might need to brush up on for the Monday test).

Saturday will begin with the final sets of class presentations at 9.15am (Brian’s class in LT4.02, Brigid in LT1.01). The rest of the Saturday sessions will be devoted to feedback on group projects and this revision session.

Twitter experiment

Thanks to all those who participated in the twitter lecture experiment in the Social Media lecture. It helps us think about further ways of integrating twitter as a way of enabling interaction and/or participation during lectures. And it was quite exciting!

A student request: re changing the class test time

A number of students have asked whether it might be possible to slightly change the scheduling of the test on Monday by putting back the start time to 7.45pm (instead of 7.15pm as stated in the Course Guide).  The test would still run for 1.5hr and would finish at 9.15pm.

The reasoning behind the request was that most students come direct to class from work and often it is difficult to get to SIM on time at 7.15p.m. because of working hours. Starting the test slightly later would minimize disruption to the whole class with students coming in late.

We’d like to get a sense of the number of students supporting this change before making a final decision so please complete the following poll – this is participatory culture in action 🙂

We’ll make a decision on this by Thursday night and advise in class as well as on this blog.

BTW, if the test time is changed, Brigid and Brian are of course happy to be available from 7pm for consultations with groups about the final collaborative project.

Request to all groups – email addresses please

We’d like to email feedback sheets, including grades, for the group presentation, before the test takes place, so as students have some idea how they are doing so far. We will do this by the evening of Sunday 21st.

To assist in this process we’d ask that just 1 member of the group send an email to their tutor (which is cc’d to each other member of the group). The subject line should read ‘[Name of Group’ email addresses]. There is no need for a separate message.

Thanks for your assistance.

Saturday – test revision session

We’re running a test revision session for those interested  this coming Saturday (20/11) at 11am, for about 30-40 minutes.

The revision session will consist of Brigid and I running through some typical questions similar to those being presented in the test (as well as answering any general questions you might have).  We’ll get you to try and answer these questions using keepad student response devices (if this new technology works OK!). How to add links to to other group projects

Some groups have been struggling with this. There are two possible methods.

1. Go into your blog dashboard

2. Select ‘Widgets’ [from within the ‘Appearance’ menu on the LHS (left hand side)]

3. Select ‘Links’ (easiest option) or ‘Custom Menu’ and drag them to the sidebar on the RHS.

For ‘Links’ (which is your blogroll) you select ‘Links’ in the LHS of the dashboard. Add group sites by referring to the Comm2062 blog.

Likewise, for ‘Custom Menu’ you select ‘Menus’ from the ‘Appearance’ menu on the lhs and add new group website links using the dialogue box that then appears.

Group presentation schedule

Here is the schedule. Let us know tomorrow if anyone is missing. Also if anyone desparately needs to change they will have to find another group in their class willing to swap slots (and we’ll need to be notified by the end of tomorrow at the latest)..

PLEASE READ – Presentations will start promptly following the break after the lecture (i.e. on weeknights at 8.30pm and at 9.10am on Saturday morning). It is the responsibility of ALL groups to be inside the class from that time. No show . . . no mark.

The lecturers will have a copy of your presentation on their laptops. But do please bring along a backup copy on a usb stick.

A checklist re your bits of assessment for this course

We’ve had a request in the comments for a timeline/checklist of the key assessment tasks. Here it is.

You can also download it in pdf form – Checklist – COMM2062 Assessment.

A word of advice – it is a basic assumption that you are responsible for reading the Course Guide and taking note of the various requirements of the course. We’re happy to clarify where necessary but if you don’t want to do that basic groundwork you must accept the risks and consequences.
